2nd Grade

Welcome to 2nd grade! We are so excited for this year and can't wait to embark on an amazing learning journey together. We are going to have a fun and busy year, and we are looking forward to helping each student grow and succeed. In 2nd grade, we will be learning many new and exciting things! Here is a little preview of some of the topics we will cover this year based on the Arizona State Standards:

Reading:
We will work on reading comprehension, understanding main ideas, and making predictions in stories. We will also practice fluency, building strong reading habits, and exploring a wide variety of books and texts.

Writing:
Students will learn how to write complete sentences and stories. We will practice using proper punctuation, grammar, and spelling, and we will learn to write about our ideas clearly.

Math:
In math, we will work with addition and subtraction, understanding place value, and learning about time, money, and basic geometry. Students will also practice solving word problems and using different strategies to solve math challenges.

Science:
We will explore topics like plants, animals, the weather, and the Earth. Students will have fun learning about the world around them and engaging in hands-on activities.

Social Studies:
We will learn about communities, important historical figures, and the state of Arizona. We will talk about how people live and work together in different places.

2nd Grade Readiness

 

• Math
  • Fluently add and subtract within 20
  • Be able to put different objects into groups within 20
  • Count by 1’s, 10’s, and 100’s
  • Start practicing counting by 2’s and 5’s
  • Analyze a word problem to know what you are solving for
• Reading
  • Answer Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How questions as you read a story
  • Be able to describe the main character of a story
  • Be able to identify the beginning and the end of a story
  • Ability to decode known and unknown words
• Writing
  • Write first and last name
  • Write at least 3 complete sentences
  • Recognize parts of speech - nouns, adjectives, and verbs
  • Use Capitalization and Punctuation appropriately in sentence structure

Miss Mikaela Rae

Welcome to 2nd Grade!

My name is Mikaela Rae Muscheid, but I go by Ms. Rae. I graduated from the University of Arizona with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an ESL endorsement (English as a Second Language).

In addition, I spent two summers in Costa Rica where I earned my TEFL certification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). I started teaching 2nd grade at Greenbrier 11 years ago and have loved it ever since! I look forward to having an exciting, fun-filled year of learning and growing together!

Mrs. Alexis Owings

Welcome to second grade!

I’m excited to be your child’s teacher this year! It is going to be a great year full of learning and fun!

I thought you might like to know a little bit about me. I have lived in Arizona all my life, attended Sunrise Mountain High School, and graduated with my bachelor's in Elementary Education with an emphasis in English from Grand Canyon University. Lopes up! In addition, I have my ESL endorsement (English as a Second Language). I am a highly qualified teacher for 1st through 8th grade. I also have an endorsement and am highly qualified to teach 6th-8th grade Reading and Writing. This will be my 12th year teaching in The Deer Valley School District and my 11th year teaching second grade at Greenbrier.

One of my goals this year is to install a love for learning in my students!
